Who is this facility a good fit for?

  • Best fit if: Adults who need medical withdrawal management (detox) and residential care with step-down options; want 12-step integration in treatment; looking for a natural, small-town setting; have private insurance or can self-pay.

  • Not a fit if: Those who require acute hospital-based care for a medical or psychiatric condition; want a non-12-step-based program; looking for luxury accommodations; have Medicaid, or are uninsured and unable to self-pay.

What to expect

Developing your care plan

  • Assessments: As a first step, clients have a phone consultation with admissions to discuss their substance use and mental health history, including any treatments they have previously been through. Once clients are admitted, they receive thorough medical and clinical assessments.
  • Individual treatment plans: Based on assessment results, clinicians give clients their recommendations. They then work together to make an adapted treatment plan that will fit clients’ overall needs, including emotional and social considerations.
  • Placement in the appropriate level: Treatment can start with withdrawal management, residential care, partial hospitalization (PHP), or intensive outpatient (IOP). Clients can step up or down between care levels as needs evolve.

Who you will meet with

  • Therapists: All therapists at Blue Ridge Mountain have a master’s degree or higher. Individual therapy sessions are held, and group sessions, including gender-specific groups, are led by therapists and counselors as well.
  • Doctors and nurses: A medical team led by a doctor is responsible for taking care of clients during withdrawal management, as well as tending to their physical needs throughout treatment. Nurses are also there to provide support; 24/7 during withdrawal management.
  • Case management: Case managers help clients with practical needs, such as guidance with continuing care planning.

Typical schedule

  • Full-day focus: Days follow a structured schedule. Classes, meetings, and therapy sessions are scheduled between about 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., with 15-minute breaks in between groups.
  • Evenings: After 5:00 p.m., clients can rest and enjoy some downtime. They have access to both indoor and outdoor recreational spaces.
  • Proven therapies: Evidence-based therapies used in groups and individual sessions include CBT, DBT, relapse prevention, and trauma-focused EMDR. For veterans, a process group called Seeking Safety: A PTSD Group for Veterans, is offered.
  • Holistic approaches: Along with evidence-based methods, clients participate in yoga, meditation, art, and music therapy. Optional spirituality groups are available.
  • 12-step work: Both on-site and off-site 12-step meetings are part of the program.

Living experiences and amenities

  • Rural home setting: Treatment takes place on a 50-acre forested campus in the Blue Ridge Mountain foothills. Clients share a room with at least one other person.
  • Indoor and outdoor recreation: After therapy hours, activities to choose from include fishing, hiking nature trails, fitness, and playing basketball.
  • Family recovery program: A two-day workshop is held for loved ones who want to support clients in their recovery. Visitation is available every other Sunday.

Aftercare

  • Step-down treatment: The residential phase usually lasts between 30 and 45 days. Afterward, clients can step down to PHP or IOP. There is an option for outpatient clients to continue living on-site during these programs.
  • Ongoing support: Clients are educated in relapse prevention planning to help keep them safe long term. They are also connected with community resources, alumni events, and peer support.

When we reached out to Blue Ridge Mountain Recovery Center, the admissions team was prompt and professional. They walked us through step-down care, basic client schedules, and natural features of the campus. The conversation felt direct and informative, with clear explanations around cost and family options.
