What to expect
Developing your care plan
- Determining the right fit: Before admission, potential clients and staff discuss insurance options, any specific medical needs, and other factors to make sure the program is a good fit.
- Adapted programs: After they are admitted, clients work with counselors to create a treatment plan that works for their needs and personal recovery goals. Plans are reassessed every two weeks.
- First three days: Clients get a thorough nursing assessment and medical evaluation. They also meet with their primary therapists and are introduced to other members of the care team.
- Approaches: Therapeutic methods include relapse prevention, counseling, trauma-informed therapy, nervous system regulation, and outdoor healing activities. Experiential groups are also a key part of the program. These include songwriting and improv theater.
“For any change to be internalized, we really need to be targeting the mind, body, spirit, and nervous system — all of these things at once.” — Dr. Jennifer Richards, Chief Clinical Officer at BriteLife Recovery
Who you will meet with
- Therapists: Clients are assigned a primary therapist who leads one-on-one sessions and assists them with treatment planning, including any changes to the approach as clients progress.
- Mental health staff: A psychiatrist helps clients navigate their mental health needs and oversees medication management when appropriate.
- Doctors and nurses: Nurses are available at all hours for withdrawal management and other medical concerns, and a physician can also attend when needed.
- Entire care team: The leadership team, grounds staff, housekeeping, and ancillary providers are also part of the large and important community supporting clients through recovery.
“Our job is to help people rebuild connections… through strong clinical work, through a healthy community, through experiential therapy.” — Dr. Jennifer Richards, Chief Clinical Officer at BriteLife Recovery
Typical schedule
- Detox groups: For those who start treatment with withdrawal management, detox-specific groups are offered in combination with 24/7 medical attention. These groups are short and designed to help clients get through the process with greater ease: progressive relaxation, meditation, and other skills are taught.
- Early start: Days begin with breakfast between 7:00 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. Afterward, clients participate in morning reflection, as well as three group sessions daily and two individual sessions weekly.
- Daily programming: Lunch is served between 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. Clients attend process therapy, then go to education groups from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. From 2:15 p.m. to 3:15 p.m., skill building sessions are held.
- Evening activities: Clients have dinner between 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., and recovery meetings begin between 7:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. Downtime occurs between and after sessions, and lights out is around 10:30 p.m.
- Family therapy program: B.A.M. (Be a Loving Mirror) is a family recovery program offered by the facility. Clients can invite their family members and other members of their support system to join. Sessions are often held over Zoom.
“Stabilization may open the door to recovery, but real recovery is about building a life someone actually wants to return to.” — Dr. Jennifer Richards, Chief Clinical Officer at BriteLife Recovery
Living experiences and amenities
- Quiet mountain setting: The facility is located in the Catskill Mountains of upstate New York. Clients stay in a spacious home, either in a private room or shared with one other roommate.
- Recreation areas: Clients have access to a game room with a pool table, foosball, and arcade games, as well as a movie theater and a music room.
- Outdoor experiences: Therapy groups are sometimes held in a tent outdoors, and clients can enjoy hiking trails, gather around a fire pit, and play sports such as volleyball and bocce ball. They can also climb a mountain or walk trails at the base.
Aftercare
- Recovery resources: Staff can connect clients to self-help groups, local meetings, and outside professionals, depending on individual needs.
- Case management: Case managers can assist clients with housing, community referrals, and navigating social services.
