Practical scheduling options and sober living
The flexible nature of Burkwood’s IOP allows clients to schedule treatment around work, family, education, and other responsibilities. Day and evening sessions are offered, as well as a fully virtual IOP for those who want to receive treatment entirely from home. The virtual IOP is conducted on a secure telehealth platform. Some clients may step down into IOP from residential care, and some may start their recovery from IOP, depending on their needs. Sober living arrangements are available for men who participate in the afternoon IOP.
Way of Life, MAAEZ, and evidence-based therapies
The center’s proprietary Way of Life program blends 12-step work with evidence-based therapies including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), motivational interviewing (MI), and trauma-focused eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR). The MAAEZ program is designed to introduce clients to 12-step recovery and a network of long-term mutual support.
Individual, group, and family counseling
Clients meet one-on-one with a primary substance use counselor either weekly or biweekly. They also participate in group sessions. These cover topics such as understanding addiction as a disease, communication skills, relapse prevention, stress and anger management, coping skills, self-compassion, and family dynamics. Groups on co-occurring mental health conditions are also offered. For families, a monthly virtual group is held on the third Wednesday of every month. Loved ones can also join individual family therapy sessions if clients want these as part of their care plan.
Aftercare program
A four-week aftercare program is available for clients who complete the IOP program. The program is adapted to each client’s needs and allows them to choose the services that work best for them. This can include weekly one-on-one therapy with a substance use counselor, or a counselor who is licensed in co-occurring mental health care. Weekly two-hour group sessions are also offered, consisting of education, therapeutic discussions, and opportunities for ongoing peer support.
