Who is this facility a good fit for?

  • Best fit if: Women needing a structured care environment; seeking support for addiction and co-occurring mental health conditions; experiencing housing, employment, or legal challenges; wanting an emphasis on peer connection; pregnant women; mothers with young children.
  • Not a fit if: Men; women needing to continue working remotely; seeking frequent family visitation; requiring immediate on-site withdrawal management; seeking private or luxury accommodations.

What to expect

Developing your care plan

  • Initial assessment: An initial assessment upon arrival helps the treatment team determine the appropriate level of care and develop a treatment plan based on client needs. This assessment takes about 3 hours.
  • Withdrawal management: Withdrawal management may take place on-site or at an outside facility before entering the residential program, depending on the severity of symptoms. Mothers who require off-site withdrawal management must arrange temporary childcare until they enter the residential program.

Who you will meet with

  • Individual therapists: Lead weekly individual counseling sessions and help clients address substance use and personal recovery needs.
  • Group counselors: Group counselors lead daily therapy and educational groups.
  • Nursing staff: An on-site nurse practitioner provides clinical and psychiatric support, and nurses provide medical support. Medications for addiction treatment (MAT) are available when clinically appropriate.
  • Case manager: Case managers offer assistance with finding permanent housing, seeking employment, and navigating legal issues. They can also help clients obtain childcare vouchers, apply for food assistance and other benefits, and connect with medical and mental health care support.
  • Peer support specialists: Peer support specialists offer recovery-focused support and encouragement.
  • Childcare staff: Provide childcare while mothers attend groups and therapy sessions.

Typical schedule

  • Structured daily programming: Clients attend mandatory group programming throughout the day, 7 days a week. These therapy and educational groups help clients understand addiction and develop coping skills.
  • Other support: Clients typically participate in individual therapy sessions once a week, and peer support and case management are integrated into the treatment schedule.
  • Daily life for mothers: While mothers participate in treatment groups, children attend on-site daycare until lunchtime. Children stay with their mothers during the evenings and overnight, which allows mothers to maintain their parenting responsibilities while also participating in intensive residential treatment.

Living experiences and amenities

  • A supervised residential setting: Room assignments ultimately depend on occupancy. Clients may have roommates, and there’s no guarantee of a private room. When space is available, mothers may live with their children up to age 12. Staff is available 24 hours a day.
  • Outdoor and relaxation spaces: Clients have access to outdoor gardens, relaxation areas, and a lounge.
  • Phone access and outside connections: Phone access is limited to a designated window between 4 and 6 p.m., and each client gets 15 minutes of phone time a day. Laptop computers are prohibited. On-site visitations are not permitted during residential treatment.

Aftercare

  • Recovery housing: The organization offers recovery housing for clients who complete the residential program.
  • Intensive outpatient treatment: First Step Home’s IOP is available as a step-down option where clients can continue to receive support while working toward greater independence.
  • Traditional outpatient treatment: Individual, couples, family, and group counseling are available on an outpatient basis, with programming focusing on relapse prevention, education, wellness, and maintaining recovery. MAT remains available in outpatient care.

Pre-admissions experience

We conducted a series of pre-admissions calls, the most recent on October 6, 2026, to evaluate response time, transparency, and patient experience.

The representative we spoke with at First Step Home was professional and matter-of-fact. They clearly explained child policies, phone rules, and aftercare but were hesitant to answer specific medical questions. The representative was transparent about phone and visitation policies and stated clearly that the facility only accepts insurance.

Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities

CARF reviews rehab programs to make sure they provide respectful, effective, and personalized care. For addiction treatment, CARF uses standards developed with the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM), so this accreditation shows the program follows trusted, evidence-based guidelines for treating substance use.

How we research treatment facilities

Across the site, our team has conducted over 1,000 pre-admissions calls to better understand the patient experience, interviewed facility clinical leaders, performed facility background checks, and compared our information against trusted public data sources.

Our research process begins with data from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), accrediting bodies including The Joint Commission and CARF, government licensing agencies, and other trusted sources. From there, our team conducts significant original research, including:

- Pre-admissions calls: We speak with admissions staff to get a candid picture of patient experience.

- Background checks: We review complaints from past clients, media reports, actions taken by accrediting bodies, and positive recognition from notable organizations.

- Clinical interviews: We have in-depth conversations with clinical leadership, often lasting up to one hour, that give us a better understanding of clinical care.

- Data partnerships: We ingest and analyze exclusive data that provides information about in-network insurance status, cost, and more.

Research varies by facility. Each facility profile shows which research steps we completed and when each step was last performed. Learn more about our research process and background checks.

How we evaluate treatment facilities

These data help us develop a Trust Score for each facility—a simple letter grade that helps you assess how much confidence to place in a facility based on the information available to us. Trust Score considers accreditation, operating history, notable recognition, and concerns identified during our background check. Our Trust Score is an objective rating that is never influenced by advertiser payment. Learn more about our Trust Score methodology.
