Veteran-exclusive residential care

Joseph House serves veterans exclusively, creating a treatment environment that centers on peer connection, military experience, and camaraderie. The facility is ADA-accessible for veterans with mobility needs, and private bedrooms and bathrooms are available for veterans experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) to help reduce triggers. There are also dedicated living quarters for female veterans. Peer support is available throughout the program. Some members of the peer support staff are veterans themselves; others may have lived experience with other challenges clients may be facing, like addiction, homelessness, or trauma.

Long-term residential treatment and a range of therapies

Veterans can stay in the program for up to a year, giving them time and stability to heal and work out their next steps. Treatment consists of individual and group counseling, substance use education, and 12-Step programming. In addition to evidence-based approaches, like CBT, veterans can also participate in holistic and experiential activities, like art therapy, equine therapy, yoga, spirituality, and pet therapy.

Two levels of outpatient care

Joseph House offers a 12-week IOP that uses the Hazelden-based Living in Balance curriculum, an evidence-based psychoeducational program that incorporates cognitive behavioral, experiential, and 12-Step approaches. CBT and other experiential activities are also integrated into treatment. Moral reconation therapy (MRT) is used in the IOP to help clients examine their decision-making, thought patterns, and behaviors. Standard outpatient treatment offers support for clients as they navigate day-to-day life. It uses the Matrix Model (which combines CBT, family education, individual counseling, and random urine drug testing), individual therapy, relapse prevention, and sober living skills.

Practical support to rebuild stability

The facility’s Service Intensive Transitional Housing provides temporary, structured housing for veterans experiencing homelessness or moving on from another crisis. Other services at this level include individual and group counseling and case management, which focuses on life skills training, employment training, financial planning, and education. Joseph House also operates the Ready & Forward Aftercare Program, which continues individual and group treatment and case management for veterans receiving outpatient treatment.

Support for friends and family

The Friends & Family Support Program helps educate loved ones of clients by offering about addiction, healthy roles and boundaries, and ways that they can support recovery. It also addresses self-care for loved ones. The goal of the program is to strengthen relationships that may have been affected by addiction and help create a more supportive recovery environment after treatment.

How we research treatment facilities

Across the site, our team has conducted over 1,000 pre-admissions calls to better understand the patient experience, interviewed facility clinical leaders, performed facility background checks, and compared our information against trusted public data sources.

Our research process begins with data from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), accrediting bodies including The Joint Commission and CARF, government licensing agencies, and other trusted sources. From there, our team conducts significant original research, including:

- Pre-admissions calls: We speak with admissions staff to get a candid picture of patient experience.

- Background checks: We review complaints from past clients, media reports, actions taken by accrediting bodies, and positive recognition from notable organizations.

- Clinical interviews: We have in-depth conversations with clinical leadership, often lasting up to one hour, that give us a better understanding of clinical care.

- Data partnerships: We ingest and analyze exclusive data that provides information about in-network insurance status, cost, and more.

Research varies by facility. Each facility profile shows which research steps we completed and when each step was last performed. Learn more about our research process and background checks.

How we evaluate treatment facilities

These data help us develop a Trust Score for each facility—a simple letter grade that helps you assess how much confidence to place in a facility based on the information available to us. Trust Score considers accreditation, operating history, notable recognition, and concerns identified during our background check. Our Trust Score is an objective rating that is never influenced by advertiser payment. Learn more about our Trust Score methodology.
