Who is this facility a good fit for?

  • Best fit if: Adolescents struggling with mental health, substance use, trauma, or eating disorders; need structured outpatient care; families who want to be closely involved in treatment; using private insurance or self-pay.

  • Not a fit if: Those who need acute, hospital-level medical or psychiatric treatment; require detox or 24/7 residential care; not willing to participate in clinical therapy; using Medicaid or are uninsured and unable to self-pay.

What to expect

Typical schedule

  • Evidence-based therapies: Therapists use a combination of proven approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and trauma-informed eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR).
  • Strong family integration: Parents are closely involved from the start of treatment. Clinicians lead loved ones in attachment-based family therapy (ABFT), an approach designed to help mend parent-child relationships.
  • Creative spaces and experiential activities: The center has a music therapy suite, a recreation room, and game spaces for teens to enjoy. Art, music, and sand tray therapy are offered for relaxation and expression.
  • Group outings: Teens go on group outings with staff to Washington DC. There, they can visit historical sites, participate in recreational activities, and contribute to community service initiatives.
  • PHP: This program follows a full-day schedule which runs approximately 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Days typically consist of four hours of clinical work such as process groups, life skills, and psychoeducation, along with four hours of academic instruction coordinated with teens’ home schools. Psychiatry, family therapy, and one-on-one counseling are incorporated into treatment.
  • IOP: Teens can attend IOP in the afternoons or evenings, allowing them to keep up with their regular school schedule. The IOP is held 3-5 days per week for about three hours per day. Sessions include group therapy, mindfulness, and skills development. One-on-one therapy can be scheduled outside of regular sessions. A virtual IOP is offered for teens who need to attend treatment from home.
  • Regular outpatient counseling: This is the lowest level of outpatient care. Teens participate in counseling sessions less than five times per week, with frequency depending on their individual treatment plan.

“Throughout the course of treatment, we continually measure outcomes and use that data to further refine and personalize care.” — Michael Roeske, PsyD, senior director of Newport Healthcare's Center for Research and Innovation

Who you will meet with

  • Therapists: Lead individual, group, and family therapy sessions, as well as experiential and adventure activities.
  • Psychiatrists: Work with teens one-on-one to manage mental health medications when needed and make sure teens are on the right track with their treatment.
  • Accredited teachers: Lead academic blocks in PHP, and help teens with schoolwork and study skills in both PHP and IOP.

Developing your care plan

  • First steps: Before the program starts, clinicians give teens medical and psychiatric background assessments. Teens’ and families’ goals are taken into account when shaping care plans.
  • Adapted care: Treatment is tailored to individual needs. These include help with depression, anxiety, mood disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), trauma, substance use, and eating disorders.

“Newport maintains a high staff-to-client ratio designed to provide individualized attention and support throughout each client’s treatment experience.” — Michael Roeske, PsyD, senior director of Newport Healthcare's Center for Research and Innovation

Aftercare

  • Discharge planning: A dedicated discharge planner helps families prepare for what comes next. This can include referrals and resources families need for when teens return home.
  • Alumni support: An alumni coordinator helps teens and families stay connected long-term. Alumni resources include themed groups, peer reunions, and online support groups for teens and their loved ones.

“Discharge and aftercare planning start early, helping ensure seamless transitions and continuity of care after treatment.” — Michael Roeske, PsyD, senior director of Newport Healthcare's Center for Research and Innovation

Medical leadership interview

Interview conducted with Michael Roeske, PsyD, senior director of Newport Healthcare's Center for Research and Innovation, on July 20, 2026 by Start Your Recovery Director of Content, Molly McSweyn.

We interviewed Michael Roeske, PsyD, senior director of Newport Healthcare's Center for Research and Innovation, to better understand how care is structured and who the program is a best fit for. He was candid and detailed about the way mental health care plans are designed to fit individual needs and progress.

“We recognize that positive outcomes are not the result of a single treatment approach, a strong therapeutic bond, or a client’s belief that treatment will help. Rather, they come from consistently integrating the best available research evidence, clinical expertise, and careful consideration of each client’s unique characteristics, cultural needs, and preferences to guide care.” — Michael Roeske, PsyD, senior director of Newport Healthcare's Center for Research and Innovation

Michael was transparent about the program’s emphasis on individualized attention, family participation, and making sure clients feel safe and comfortable during treatment.

How we research treatment facilities

Across the site, our team has conducted over 1,000 pre-admissions calls to better understand the patient experience, interviewed facility clinical leaders, performed facility background checks, and compared our information against trusted public data sources.

Our research process begins with data from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), accrediting bodies including The Joint Commission and CARF, government licensing agencies, and other trusted sources. From there, our team conducts significant original research, including:

- Pre-admissions calls: We speak with admissions staff to get a candid picture of patient experience.

- Background checks: We review complaints from past clients, media reports, actions taken by accrediting bodies, and positive recognition from notable organizations.

- Clinical interviews: We have in-depth conversations with clinical leadership, often lasting up to one hour, that give us a better understanding of clinical care.

- Data partnerships: We ingest and analyze exclusive data that provides information about in-network insurance status, cost, and more.

Research varies by facility. Each facility profile shows which research steps we completed and when each step was last performed. Learn more about our research process and background checks.

How we evaluate treatment facilities

These data help us develop a Trust Score for each facility—a simple letter grade that helps you assess how much confidence to place in a facility based on the information available to us. Trust Score considers accreditation, operating history, notable recognition, and concerns identified during our background check. Our Trust Score is an objective rating that is never influenced by advertiser payment. Learn more about our Trust Score methodology.

A Trust Score is a starting point, not a guarantee of treatment quality or outcomes. Please contact us if you would like to update or correct facility information.
