Structured outpatient treatment where clients take gradual steps toward independence

Next Step offers a clearly defined progression through its Step In, Step Down, and Step Out programs. The Step In partial hospitalization program (PHP) offers groups Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Clients attend at least 20 hours of services every week and work with clinical staff, including a substance use counselor, peer coach, client guide, and nurse practitioner. Clients in the Step Down intensive outpatient program (IOP) attend at least 9 hours of programming a week, typically three 3-hour sessions a week for 12 weeks. Supportive recovery housing is available for those in these programs who need it.

Recovery housing and ongoing support

The Step Out program is the facility’s transitional housing program. It acts as a bridge between structured treatment and independent living, providing a stable place where clients can live while building the foundation for lasting recovery. Clients can get continued outpatient case management, including peer coaching, wellness and recovery groups, life skills development, and employment support, while staying in apartment-style independent living for up to one year.

Faith-based recovery community welcoming people from all faiths

Next Step operates in a neighborhood setting using a faith-based philosophy that emphasizes spiritual growth, relationships, and community. Bible studies, faith development groups, 12-Step meetings, Celebrate Recovery services, and spiritual courses are included in programming. Although the program has a Christian orientation, it welcomes people of different faiths and those with no religious affiliation. Clients also work with peer coaches with lived recovery experience, attend sober social events, and participate in recreational opportunities to develop relationships outside formal counseling.

Mental health counseling and access to addiction medications

Treatment addresses substance use alongside co-occurring mental health conditions. Clients work with licensed therapists and addiction counselors who provide individual, family, and group counseling using various approaches, including trauma-informed care. Next Step partners with outside agencies to help clients access medications for addiction treatment (MAT).

Practical skills for life after treatment

Programming also emphasizes working on practical skills to support clients as they transition to independent living. Clients can work with an employment coach to prepare for and obtain work, and boundary classes can help clients establish healthier personal limits and recognize patterns that may contribute to substance use. Nutrition and fitness classes support physical health, and 12-Step groups address personal strengths, relationships, accountability, and relapse prevention.

Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities

For addiction treatment, CARF uses standards developed with the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM), so this accreditation shows the program follows trusted, evidence-based guidelines for treating substance use.

How we research treatment facilities

Across the site, our team has conducted over 1,000 pre-admissions calls to better understand the patient experience, interviewed facility clinical leaders, performed facility background checks, and compared our information against trusted public data sources.

Our research process begins with data from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), accrediting bodies including The Joint Commission and CARF, government licensing agencies, and other trusted sources. From there, our team conducts significant original research, including:

- Pre-admissions calls: We speak with admissions staff to get a candid picture of patient experience.

- Background checks: We review complaints from past clients, media reports, actions taken by accrediting bodies, and positive recognition from notable organizations.

- Clinical interviews: We have in-depth conversations with clinical leadership, often lasting up to one hour, that give us a better understanding of clinical care.

- Data partnerships: We ingest and analyze exclusive data that provides information about in-network insurance status, cost, and more.

Research varies by facility. Each facility profile shows which research steps we completed and when each step was last performed. Learn more about our research process and background checks.

How we evaluate treatment facilities

These data help us develop a Trust Score for each facility—a simple letter grade that helps you assess how much confidence to place in a facility based on the information available to us. Trust Score considers accreditation, operating history, notable recognition, and concerns identified during our background check. Our Trust Score is an objective rating that is never influenced by advertiser payment. Learn more about our Trust Score methodology.
