Small, Women-Only Residential Setting in Rural Minnesota
Set in a quiet, countryside area of Waverly, Minnesota, this women-only residential program is intentionally small, which can make day-to-day treatment feel more personal and easier to navigate. The environment is home-like, with shared bedrooms, indoor common spaces for downtime, and outdoor seating on landscaped grounds. Access to nature is part of the routine, with seasonal recreation that can include walks and yard games in warmer months and indoor activities like a weight room, ping pong, board games, crafts, and fitness equipment.
Co-Occurring Disorders Care With Ongoing Assessments
The program is licensed to treat co-occurring disorders, so substance use and mental health needs can be addressed within the same treatment plan. Care begins with an intake assessment led by a licensed professional and guided by American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) criteria to help determine the right level of care. Clients are reassessed throughout their stay so the care plan can adapt over time — especially helpful for people whose symptoms, medications, or recovery needs shift during early stabilization.
Evidence-Based Therapy, Skills Practice, and Medical Support
Treatment includes individual sessions with an addiction counselor and a mental health counselor, plus group and educational therapy. Evidence-based approaches include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), motivational interviewing, and Seeking Safety. Group topics may include women’s mental health education, coping skills, relapse awareness, recovery maintenance, self-discovery, health education, life skills, family education, and female-centered nutrition education. The program also offers medications for addiction treatment (MAT), including medications used for opioid use disorder and alcohol use disorder.
Practical Policies and Daily Life
Daily structure is supported with meals and snacks, with medical and religious dietary needs honored when possible. Clients can do their own laundry on-site. The facility allows limited device use based on phase of care and progress, with devices typically not permitted during the first week. Smoking and vaping are permitted in designated areas within program rules. Transportation assistance is also available, which can help reduce logistical barriers to getting to treatment and staying engaged in care.
Planning for What Comes Next With Continuing Support
Discharge planning and continuing care connections help clients line up next steps after residential treatment. For longer-term community support, the New Beginnings Alumni Association offers regular gatherings and events, with opportunities to stay connected through fellowship and outreach after completing the program.
