In Crisis?

Overview

Call601-371-7335 WebsiteVisit Website

Residential addiction treatment program where clients move from a highly supervised, peer-centered setting to a lower-intensity program where they can work, attend school, or pursue job training and return to the facility in the evenings for treatment. Trauma-focused treatment, life-story groups, and hands-on team-building activities, including a ropes course, are available. Clients follow a structured daily routine with shared responsibilities. The Recovery Support Services program and an alumni community offer ongoing support. Partial funding may be available through the Mississippi Department of Mental Health, and no one is denied services solely because they cannot pay.

Who is this facility a good fit for?

  • Best fit if: Adults needing a structured residential setting; preparing to return to school or work; needing support for co-occurring mental health conditions; looking for a program with peer-based recovery.
  • Not a fit if: Adults seeking luxury accommodations or extensive amenities; needing regular access to personal phones or computers; seeking minimally supervised residential treatment; needing hospital-level withdrawal management (detox); wanting to pay with insurance.

What to expect

Developing your care plan

  • Comprehensive assessment: Clients receive an assessment based on the 6 American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) criteria, which are withdrawal potential, physical health, mental and behavioral health, readiness to change, risk of continued substance use, and living environment.
  • A collaborative model: Clients contribute to their own treatment plans, incorporating personal goals, co-occurring conditions, cultural background, spirituality, and other individual needs.
  • Regular reviews: The treatment team reviews progress every 2 weeks. They consider any changes to the ASAM criteria and client progress to help determine whether the recommended length of stay or a transition to a lower level of care is appropriate.
  • Various levels of care: Harbor House offers 2 levels of care. High-intensity residential care includes 24/7 supervision, at least 20 hours of group therapy and an hour of individual therapy every week, and limited off-campus activities. In the lower-intensity program, Hope Harbor, clients work or attend school during the day, then return in the evening for ongoing counseling and recovery support.

Who you will meet with

  • Admission staff: Conduct initial phone screenings and determine when further evaluation is appropriate.
  • Medical team: A physician is available throughout the week to oversee medical care, evaluate medical needs, and determine when clients might need hospital-based withdrawal management. Nurses are on-site 24/7, providing assessments, administering medications, and helping with medical needs.
  • Licensed and certified counselors: Lead individual, group, and family therapy. Specialized trauma providers are also available.
  • Peer support specialists: Facilitate life-story groups drawing on their lived experience and help clients develop recovery support plans.

Typical schedule

  • Mornings: In the intensive residential program, clients wake up around 6 a.m. and have breakfast, complete chores, and have private time for meditation or reflection. Later in the morning, clients participate in education and therapeutic activities and psychoeducational groups. Note that clients in the lower-intensity program may leave campus for approved employment, education, or training and have different daytime routines.
  • Afternoons: In the afternoon, clients attend group discussions and spend time exercising, socializing, doing recovery assignments, or relaxing.
  • Evenings: Most evenings include Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meetings or time to work on recovery assignments.
  • Weekends: On the weekends, clients have more free time and opportunities for recreation. They can sleep later and spend more time on leisure activities.

Living experiences and amenities

  • Ropes course: A distinctive feature of Harbor House is the ropes course. This course takes 2 days to complete, with 4 hours of activities each day. Clients work together to overcome obstacles and meet group goals.
  • Shared living spaces: Men, women, and veterans have different residential units. Clients are responsible for completing assigned chores and maintaining their living spaces.
  • Limiting distractions: Cell phones, personal vehicles, and non-recovery reading materials are prohibited with the goal of helping clients stay focused on recovery.
  • Recreation and downtime: Clients have time to exercise, socialize, and relax throughout the day.
  • Family connections: Family therapy is offered, as well as a 4-session family education program with classes on Thursday evenings.

Aftercare

  • Recovery Support Services (RSS) program: After residential treatment, clients can participate in Harbor House’s Recovery Support Services program. This program provides ongoing peer support and accountability. The program asks for a 2-year commitment. Participation is voluntary unless court-ordered.
  • Alumni community: The program’s alumni association, True North: Friends of Harbor House, lets clients remain connected to their community after treatment.
  • Support for returning to everyday life: The facility connects clients with community-based primary care and mental health providers. Help is also available to find opportunities for employment, education, and job training while still in treatment.

Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities

For addiction treatment, CARF uses standards developed with the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM), so this accreditation shows the program follows trusted, evidence-based guidelines for treating substance use.

How we research treatment facilities

Across the site, our team has conducted over 1,000 pre-admissions calls to better understand the patient experience, interviewed facility clinical leaders, performed facility background checks, and compared our information against trusted public data sources.

Our research process begins with data from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), accrediting bodies including The Joint Commission and CARF, government licensing agencies, and other trusted sources. From there, our team conducts significant original research, including:

- Pre-admissions calls: We speak with admissions staff to get a candid picture of patient experience.

- Background checks: We review complaints from past clients, media reports, actions taken by accrediting bodies, and positive recognition from notable organizations.

- Clinical interviews: We have in-depth conversations with clinical leadership, often lasting up to one hour, that give us a better understanding of clinical care.

- Data partnerships: We ingest and analyze exclusive data that provides information about in-network insurance status, cost, and more.

Research varies by facility. Each facility profile shows which research steps we completed and when each step was last performed. Learn more about our research process and background checks.

How we evaluate treatment facilities

These data help us develop a Trust Score for each facility—a simple letter grade that helps you assess how much confidence to place in a facility based on the information available to us. Trust Score considers accreditation, operating history, notable recognition, and concerns identified during our background check. Our Trust Score is an objective rating that is never influenced by advertiser payment. Learn more about our Trust Score methodology.
