Betty Ford Center - Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation
Overview
Outpatient addiction and mental health treatment designed to fit around daily responsibilities, including day treatment, a morning in-person intensive outpatient program (IOP), an evening virtual IOP, lower-intensity outpatient treatment, and the ability to step down as needs change. Treatment integrates substance use and co-occurring mental health care. Clinicians reassess progress and adjust program length and intensity as clients progress. Who is this facility a good fit for?
- Best fit if: Adults seeking outpatient care who need more support than once-weekly therapy; looking for step-down support after transitioning from residential or higher-intensity treatment; needing to balance treatment with work or other responsibilities; seeking support for substance use and mental health challenges; seeking group-based recovery; looking for a program with ongoing support.
- Not a fit if: Adults needing medical withdrawal management (detox); seeking residential care or 24-hour supervision.
What to expect
Developing your care plan
- Intake and first steps: The first step is a brief phone questionnaire covering basic information, followed by a scheduled 60- to 90-minute phone assessment with a licensed addiction counselor. This assessment covers clinical history and client needs to help determine the recommended program and expected treatment duration.
- Re-evaluation: The care team continually evaluates client progress and adjusts the length of the program and level of care as needed.
- Various approaches to care: Clients may participate in different treatment approaches, including individual, group, family, and couples counseling. Other approaches may include relapse prevention work, 12-Step facilitation, life-skills work, and peer support. Virtual options are also available.
Who you will meet with
- Dedicated substance use counselor: Each client is paired with a substance use counselor who can work with them in individual therapy and aftercare planning and offer 12-Step guidance.
- Mental health clinicians: These professionals work with clients who have co-occurring mental health needs.
Typical schedule
- Day treatment: The day treatment program is the most intensive outpatient option and meets between 25 and 30 hours a week.
- Intensive outpatient program: Schedules vary depending on the program. In-person IOP is scheduled Monday through Thursday from 8 to 11 a.m., and the virtual IOP is Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. This program can last 4, 6, 8, or 10 weeks, depending on clinical need.
- Outpatient groups: Lower-intensity outpatient groups meet for 90-minute sessions once a week, though schedules may depend on the group.
Living experiences and amenities
- Structured blocks of treatment: Clients attend scheduled treatment times and return home afterward so they can work treatment into their daily lives. Virtual options add more flexibility and may be particularly useful for clients who have work obligations or transportation concerns.
- Integrated step-down options: Clients can move toward lower-intensity outpatient programs as they progress through treatment, going from day treatment to the IOP to once-weekly sessions toward the end of care.
- Family involvement: Counseling and other support services are available for family members, with family-focused education and recovery resources available through the larger organization.
Aftercare
- Early planning: Aftercare planning begins during treatment and is managed by the assigned counselor and the overall treatment team. Post-treatment plans focus on strengthening recovery, preventing relapse, and managing ongoing mental health symptoms.
- Gradual step-down options: Clients can step down from the day program to the IOP and standard outpatient treatment, potentially reaching once-weekly sessions.
- Broader support: Continuing care resources from Betty Ford also include phone-based coaching, monitoring and accountability services, mobile apps, speaker events, online communities, and recovery activities.

View all facilities in FloridaHow we research treatment facilities
Across the site, our team has conducted over 1,000 pre-admissions calls to better understand the patient experience, interviewed facility clinical leaders, performed facility background checks, and compared our information against trusted public data sources.
Our research process begins with data from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), accrediting bodies including The Joint Commission and CARF, government licensing agencies, and other trusted sources. From there, our team conducts significant original research, including:
- Pre-admissions calls: We speak with admissions staff to get a candid picture of patient experience.
- Background checks: We review complaints from past clients, media reports, actions taken by accrediting bodies, and positive recognition from notable organizations.
- Clinical interviews: We have in-depth conversations with clinical leadership, often lasting up to one hour, that give us a better understanding of clinical care.
- Data partnerships: We ingest and analyze exclusive data that provides information about in-network insurance status, cost, and more.
Research varies by facility. Each facility profile shows which research steps we completed and when each step was last performed. Learn more about our research process and background checks.
How we evaluate treatment facilities
These data help us develop a Trust Score for each facility—a simple letter grade that helps you assess how much confidence to place in a facility based on the information available to us. Trust Score considers accreditation, operating history, notable recognition, and concerns identified during our background check. Our Trust Score is an objective rating that is never influenced by advertiser payment. Learn more about our Trust Score methodology.
Important disclaimer
We cannot guarantee the quality of treatment at any facility. We cannot independently confirm the accuracy of every data point, and some information may become outdated or change over time. A Trust Score is a starting point, not a guarantee of treatment quality or outcomes. Please contact us if you would like to update or correct facility information.
