English Mountain Recovery Center
Overview
A 12-step-centered residential addiction program with separate men’s and women’s programming on a 27-acre Smoky Mountains campus in Tennessee. Therapist-guided activities with horses help clients practice communication, trust, and boundaries, and a veterans program pairs newcomers with veteran peers for additional support. Care includes withdrawal management (detox), residential treatment, and a facility-run virtual intensive outpatient program (IOP). Amenities include a labyrinth and a 12-step-themed miniature golf course. Alumni can stay connected through weekly virtual meetings and monthly in-person activities. Who is this facility a good fit for?
- Best fit if: Adults seeking substance use treatment and support for co-occurring mental health conditions; looking for a program with a 12-Step, spiritually oriented approach.
- Not a fit if: Adults needing to make frequent work calls; wanting unrestricted contact with family.
What to expect
Developing your care plan
- First steps: Clients participate in an initial assessment that includes an insurance check with possible same-day approval and admission.
- Personalized care: Case managers develop treatment plans based on substances used, medical history, and any co-occurring mental health challenges. Various forms of treatment are available, including a specialized equine interaction therapy program and therapy dog visits.
- Population specific groups: Gender-specific programming addresses different topics. The men’s program focuses on conflict resolution, emotional expression, and masculinity, while the women’s program focuses on trauma triggers, domestic violence and sexual abuse, and self-esteem. Both groups address parenting concerns and workplace pressures. A veteran-specific Battle Buddies program is led by specially trained staff and pairs a veteran entering treatment with another veteran who has completed part of the program.
Who you will meet with
- Case managers: Case managers collaborate with clients on their treatment plans.
- Therapists: Therapists meet with clients for 2 individual sessions per week. Additional sessions can be requested for things that arise between appointments.
- Medical team: During withdrawal management, medical staff check clients approximately every 20 minutes, including their vital signs and oxygen levels. They also check in with clients in residential treatment daily.
- Aftercare planner: Dedicated discharge planners help clients prepare for life after residential treatment.
- Alumni coordinator: An alumni coordinator helps alumni find local recovery meetings, connect with fellow alumni, and get answers to recovery-related questions.
Typical schedule
- Withdrawal management: The stabilization period is quieter, with no phone access, frequent monitoring, and limited activity.
- Residential treatment with recurring activities: Clients attend individual therapy sessions and group discussions, and participate in education about coping skills and relapse prevention work. The veterans' program adds daily process groups, mindfulness, and exercise.
Living experiences and amenities
- A shared living environment: Clients share bedrooms with a roommate. Men’s and women’s programs have separate residential areas, and there's an onsite dining hall.
- Serene 27-acre campus setting in the Smoky Mountains: The mountain campus offers trails, a labyrinth, a fire pit, an outdoor pool, and a 12-step-themed miniature golf course.
- Communication and visitation: Personal phones are not permitted. When in the residential program, clients can make 15-minute calls 2 to 3 times a week. Family visitation is not permitted; clients can request family therapy sessions with spouses, relatives, or other loved ones through the clinical team.
Aftercare
- Concrete referral options: A dedicated aftercare planner helps connect clients with continuing treatment options. This can include ongoing therapy, extended care, and sober living. Veterans support may also include arranging local treatment, providing housing and food assistance, and connecting them with veteran networking resources.
- Alumni program: A coordinator connects alumni with meetings and makes aftercare calls. Weekly virtual meetings, monthly in-person activities, and annual reunions are also available.
- Virtual Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP): The facility offers a virtual IOP with clinician-led groups, individual counseling, and educational sessions.
Pre-admissions experience
We conducted a series of pre-admissions calls, the most recent on October 14, 2026, to evaluate response time, transparency, and patient experience.
The representative we spoke with at English Mountain Recovery Center was polite, nonaggressive, and fairly laid-back. At times, the conversation felt blunt and transactional, and the representative was upfront about their own limitations in answering questions. They offered upfront figures for cost but provided surface-level details about daily life and clinical staff.
Client reviews
English Mountain Recovery reviewers praise caring staff, recovery tools, and mountain views; recurring concerns involve medication management, communication, and billing. Percentages reflect sentiment in the supplied reviews, not treatment success rates.
- Treatment quality & outcomes (90% positive): Reviewers often credit counseling and practical coping skills with helping their recovery. Some report concerns about medication changes, limited medical attention, and inconsistent classes. "There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t use something they taught me."
- Staff & care experience (90% positive): Many reviewers describe compassionate, attentive staff who treat clients as individuals. Others report disrespectful interactions, privacy concerns, or discriminatory treatment. "They don't treat you like a number, they treat you like a human."
- Support & community (85% positive): Clients describe lasting friendships, alumni meetings, and continued encouragement after treatment. Some clients and families report difficulty staying connected or receiving follow-up support.
- Facility & environment (80% positive): Mountain views, meals, and apartment-style housing receive praise. Some reviewers report cleanliness and maintenance problems, noise, or advertised amenities being unavailable.
- Access & process (60% positive): Reviewers appreciate admissions help, insurance guidance, and aftercare planning. Some report unclear charges, difficulty reaching staff or family, and problems with discharge arrangements. "From the admissions process to my discharge, I was taken care of every step of the way."

Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities
CARF reviews rehab programs to make sure they provide respectful, effective, and personalized care. For addiction treatment, CARF uses standards developed with the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM), so this accreditation shows the program follows trusted, evidence-based guidelines for treating substance use.

View all facilities in FloridaHow we research treatment facilities
Across the site, our team has conducted over 1,000 pre-admissions calls to better understand the patient experience, interviewed facility clinical leaders, performed facility background checks, and compared our information against trusted public data sources.
Our research process begins with data from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), accrediting bodies including The Joint Commission and CARF, government licensing agencies, and other trusted sources. From there, our team conducts significant original research, including:
- Pre-admissions calls: We speak with admissions staff to get a candid picture of patient experience.
- Background checks: We review complaints from past clients, media reports, actions taken by accrediting bodies, and positive recognition from notable organizations.
- Clinical interviews: We have in-depth conversations with clinical leadership, often lasting up to one hour, that give us a better understanding of clinical care.
- Data partnerships: We ingest and analyze exclusive data that provides information about in-network insurance status, cost, and more.
Research varies by facility. Each facility profile shows which research steps we completed and when each step was last performed. Learn more about our research process and background checks.
How we evaluate treatment facilities
These data help us develop a Trust Score for each facility—a simple letter grade that helps you assess how much confidence to place in a facility based on the information available to us. Trust Score considers accreditation, operating history, notable recognition, and concerns identified during our background check. Our Trust Score is an objective rating that is never influenced by advertiser payment. Learn more about our Trust Score methodology.

We cannot guarantee the quality of treatment at any facility. We cannot independently confirm the accuracy of every data point, and some information may become outdated or change over time. A Trust Score is a starting point, not a guarantee of treatment quality or outcomes. Please contact us if you would like to update or correct facility information.
